The Story
A cast iron or aluminum display pedestal or plant stand in the Baroque Revival manner, dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The structure is defined by a bold Solomonic barley-twist column finished in parcel-gilding, framed by deep ebonised turnings at the cap and foot.
The shaft terminates above in a rope-twist collar beneath an overhanging circular capital with a dished top, turned to accommodate a bust, urn, or jardinière. At its base, the spiral column resolves into a lobed and gadrooned apron resting on an ebonised moulded collar, seated upon a solid square base of the same material.
The column retains an antique gilded surface over gesso with gentle tonal patination, set in sharp relief by the contrasting black-lacquered elements. Designed as a formal room accent, it offers substantial presence and suitable for a displayed plant or object.
