The Story
A small wooden bedside cabinet or nightstand raised on slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, finished in an antiqued gold paint. The rectangular carcass features a moulded top over a single door, framed by applied Rococo-style scrolling moulding along the upper rail and fitted with an ornate cast metal escutcheon suspended with a small pendant bead.
Centring the door is an applied sunburst cartouche enclosing a miniature painted or printed human eye—recalling the Georgian tradition of lover's eye miniatures, translated here into surrealist interior decoration. The cabinet door is hinged at the base, suggesting a fall-front aperture or drop-down compartment. While the underlying carcass appears to be mid-twentieth-century European manufacture, the gilded surface and central ocular device represent a later, bespoke decorative intervention.
