The Story

A late Victorian ebonised cylinder desk, circa 1880, constructed in the Aesthetic Movement taste. The rectangular upper section features a shallow frieze drawer fitted with brass drop handles, set above a curved cylinder fall. The barrel is incised with stylized guilloche and geometric bands, echoing Anglo-Japanese design principles popularised in the 1870s and 1880s.

The sides and kneehole panel are similarly articulated with incised vertical reedings, roundel roundels, and stylized foliate spandrels. Supported on shaped bracket sledge feet joined by an inset panelled back, the piece exhibits the angular restraint and architectural framing characteristic of the period's commercial reform furniture.
