The House
In the great houses of England there was always an heir, and there was always a spare. The heir got the house. The spare got whatever could be carried: a pair of library chairs, a marble bust brought back from Rome, a lacquer cabinet no one else quite knew what to do with.
Those are the pieces we look for. British Victorian and Edwardian furniture made to last several owners; classical and neoclassical marbles bought on the Grand Tour (and select reproductions that have the look); objets and far-Eastern curiosities that arrived by sea and stayed. Each has already outlived one family, and most have outlived several.
The house is at Door 15, on South 3rd Street in Hudson, two hours up the river from New York. We buy slowly and write about what we buy, because a piece is more than its dimensions. Designers come for the trade program, collectors for the Dispatch, and a good many people simply to sit in the club chairs and take in the scenery.
Hope to see you soon for a welcome break from the mundane.
