The Story
A substantial late nineteenth-century armchair constructed in the Louis XV revival manner, executed in carved walnut. The high cartouche back features an undulating crest rail carved with foliate scrolls and central floral motifs, flowing downwards into padded armrests terminating in carved scroll knuckles. The shaped seat retains a deep front rail echoing the serpentine line of the back, supported upon carved cabriole front legs with foliate shoulders and swept rear supports.
The chair is upholstered in an aged olive-drab crushed velvet finished with self-piping and gathered ruche detailing along the seat apron. The proportions indicate an upholstered salon chair built for comfort, demonstrating the characteristic Victorian penchant for revivalist French elegance married with substantial English or Continental joinery.
