The Story
A late nineteenth-century tilt-top occasional table of serpentine outline, the shaped top veneered in burr walnut with fine specimen wood inlay. The central cartouche, set against an ebonised ground, depicts a family of chamois perched on a rocky crag, rendered in engraved fruitwood and sycamore with penwork detailing. This central vignette is framed by scrolling foliate borders, anthemion motifs, and matched burr panels.
The top tilts upon a turned and foliate-carved baluster standard, supported on three carved cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet. Exemplary of the alpine marquetry exported from Switzerland and favoured by Grand Tour travellers and British domestic interiors during the final quarter of the nineteenth century, the piece balances functional cabinetwork with decorative pictorial veneer.
