The Story
This late Victorian five-light candelabrum demonstrates the era's taste for naturalia married with tailored metalwork, common to British sporting estates and Continental hunting lodges alike. Centred on a substantial shed antler tine, likely red deer, the piece utilises the natural branching tines to support four upper sconces and one lower candle branch.
The metalwork features cast and chased cable-twist rope decoration wound spiral-fashion up the antler shaft. Each cylindrical candle nozzle rests above a dished drip-pan with gadrooned or ropework borders, flanked by decorative hanging rope tassels suspended from the tines. The assembly terminates in a heavily stepped, circular silver-plated pedestal base bordered with conforming rope-twist bands. While unsigned, the balance between raw organic curvature and precise lathe-turned metalwork reflects the commercial metalworking trades of Birmingham or Sheffield active in the late nineteenth century.
