The Story

A late nineteenth-century glazed shadow box arrangement of assorted marine specimens, presented within a deep-set frame with moulded gilt composition borders.

The composition is centred on a dried spider crab with elongated legs arranged geometrically across dried sea fans, flanked by an edible crab, a horseshoe crab carapace, a starfish, and an urchin. The surrounding perimeter is populated with an orderly balance of bivalves, cowries, and various conchological specimens mounted against a pale neutral ground.

Constructed in the tradition of Victorian amateur natural history collecting, such displays were devised to preserve fragile littoral finds while functioning as decorative wall panels. The outer frame features egg-and-dart and foliate relief bands in gilt gesso over timber, housing a deep glazed shadow box that protects the desiccated carapaces and shell specimens.
