The Story
A European roebuck (Capreolus capreolus) trophy skull mount, the bleached cranial bone and six-point antlers secured to an ornate carved timber backplate.
The shield is worked in the Bavarian or Black Forest manner, presenting an oval central reserve framed by deeply undercut, overlapping oak leaves with acorns, gathered at the base with a tied ribbon. Carved from a dense hardwood with a dark, stained finish, the piece reflects late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century hunting lodge decoration, executed with crisp relief and traditional attention to botanical detail.
