The Story
Formed from a natural red deer antler, this five-light candelabrum exemplifies the late nineteenth-century Continental taste for sporting and hunting trophies adapted for domestic illumination. The antler serves as the sculptural stem, rising from a turned stepped brass socle bordered with twisted rope moulding.
Each tine terminates in a cast brass candle socket set upon a shaped wax pan. The structure is entwined with lengths of twisted metallic cordage and finished with hung tassels beneath the lower branches, contrasting the rough, pearled texture of the horn against polished metalwork. Commonly produced in southern Germany and Austria for hunting lodges and country residences, such fixtures married the rustic naturalism of the Black Forest tradition with conventional salon metalwork.
