The Story
Constructed around a single shed red deer or stag antler beam, this five-light candelabrum follows the Central European tradition of Jagdstil or rustic sporting decor popular in the late nineteenth century. The natural branching tines are utilised as supports for five cast brass candleholders, each designed with petal-form drip pans and tulip-form sconces.\n\nThe antler shaft is socketed into a heavy, stepped spun-brass plinth encircled by a rope-twist border for stability. Metallic bullion rope-twist cord is bound spirally around the main beam and individual tines, terminating in fringed metallic tassels suspended from the upper branches. The contrast of the pitted, organic surface of the horn against the burnished metal and military-style passementerie is characteristic of country house and shooting lodge furnishings of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
