The Story
A Victorian Gothic Revival carved walnut hall chair, dating to circa 1870. The pierced high back is structured as a lancet arch centred by a pierced trefoil motif and surmounted by a bold fleur-de-lis finial, flanked by crocketed architectural uprights. The inset back panel and padded seat are trimmed in patterned woven gimp and covered in deep claret velvet.
Raised on square-section front legs carved with fluting and panelled corner blocks, terminating in concealed castors, with gently splayed rear uprights. Constructed from solid walnut with machine-mortised joinery and crisp decorative openwork typical of high Victorian ecclesiastical and domestic taste following the Great Exhibition period. The dark, polished timber provides a sombre architectural profile characteristic of the Gothic style revived for domestic halls and libraries.
