The Story
A diminutive folk art equine figure, fashioned from heavy hide and assembled with stout saddle-stitching. The form is minimally rendered yet distinct, capturing either a pony or donkey in a quiet, four-square stance. The mane is constructed from layered, notched leather strips set into the dorsal seam, whilst the head and legs are drawn down into tight, functional joins typical of harness-making techniques.
Likely originating as a saddler's apprentice piece or a sturdy nursery plaything, the model is packed firmly with an internal core that preserves its silhouette. The leather displays an honest history of handling, bearing deep craquelure, surface rubbing, and an unctuous, darkened patina across the upper surfaces. It stands unaided with a simple, sculptural presence.
