The Story
A substantial mid-twentieth-century Balinese architectural or decorative figure, carved from local softwood and finished in rich polychrome pigments with parcel-gilt details. The figure, depicted in a crouched kneeling posture, represents a demonic guardian or mythic entity—likely Garuda or a raksasa—characterised by protruding fangs, wide bulging eyes, an elaborate tiered floral headdress, and decorative jewelry.
The piece demonstrates the meticulous relief work associated with traditional Balinese temple and pavilion carving. The plumage and ornamentation are deeply undercut and highlighted in crimson, turquoise, cream, and leaf gilding. Constructed in traditional workshop fashion, such figures were produced both for architectural embellishment and as standalone protective guardians.
