The Story
A painted softwood pedestal stand of neoclassical architectural form, dating from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The piece features a flat, square top with a broad flat-framed border surrounding an inset central panel, raised upon a turned collar and a deeply fluted circular column. The column terminates on a stepped square plinth base with moulded edges.
The surface exhibits considerable age and wear, finished in layers of cream and pale stone-coloured paint over gesso and timber, with faint greenish undertones exposed across the top. The fluting of the shaft is cleanly turned, evoking classical architectural salvage, while the square platform provides a stable surface intended originally for the display of a marble bust, bronze, or jardinière.
