The Story
A monumental decorative wall mask, carved from a single dense timber plank and worked in high relief. The design is dominated by an expansive, smoothly polished forehead that swells outward, framed by sections of deeply incised diagonal cross-hatching darkened with pigment to create strong tonal contrast.
The lower register features narrow pierced eyes beneath textured brows, an angular prominent nose, and carved lateral ears hung with braided fibre cordage and tassels. At the chin, a zoomorphic figure—likely a crocodile or stylised reptile—is carved in relief, echoing regional motifs commonly encountered in Indonesian and broader Oceanic decorative traditions. The piece is finished in a warm amber-brown stain with a soft lustre, pierced at the upper margin for suspension.
