The Story

A compact slant-front writing desk or davenport-form lectern table, constructed in solid and veneered walnut, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1885. The structure is distinguished by an architectural cresting rail carved with classical scrolls, strapwork, and a central roundel medallion, surmounting a hinged, sloping desktop inset with its original (though heavily worn) writing surface.

The hinged lid lifts on brass butt hinges to reveal a shallow writing well fitted with partitioned compartments for stationery and ink pots. Below, the carcass rests upon ring-turned and fluted front supports, backed by a panelled rear upright, united at the base by a shaped plinth shelf cut with a deep arch to accommodate the sitter's feet. The proportions and joinery reflect the commercial Renaissance Revival taste favoured in late nineteenth-century domestic study furniture.
