The Story
A late Victorian tabletop chest of eight drawers, constructed in pine with a rich, dark stain. Sized for a desk or work-table, it was conceived for orderly sorting—likely originally serving a draughtsman, entomologist, or domestic collector of coins or botanical specimens.
The chest features a moulded, overhanging rectangular top above a bank of eight shallow, full-width drawers. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of diminutive turned wooden knob pulls and slides smoothly within the carcase. The piece rests upon an enclosed, straight plinth base.
The construction is straightforward and utilitarian, typical of late nineteenth-century provincial cabinetwork. The drawer depths are uniform and well suited to storing prints, textiles, or geological specimens, retaining a mellow, aged surface across the exterior.
