The Story
A large cylindrical conservatory birdcage constructed in cast and drawn metal, dating from around the turn of the twentieth century. The domed cage is formed from closely spaced wire bars terminating in an architectural foliate finial surmounted by an oval suspension loop.
The lower rim and apron are heavily cast with acanthus scrollwork and rocaille flourishes, enclosing a removable circular sheet-metal drop tray. Access to the interior is provided by a hinged arched door formed with openwork scrolls, wire filigree, and a radiating sunburst crest. Designed either for ceiling suspension in an aviary or conservatory, or to rest upon a dedicated pedestal or sideboard, the piece displays an attractive, dry, dark brown aged patina throughout.
