The Story
A late nineteenth-century Italian carved white marble desk model or souvenir sarcophagus, carved after the celebrated Hellenistic tomb of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus preserved in the Vatican Museums.
Carved in white statuary marble with grey veining, the piece is fashioned in architectural form with a spreading plinth base, moulded cornice, and a stepped, pedimented cover crowned with volute-inspired acroteria. Produced primarily for the Grand Tour market in Rome, such classical reductions functioned as inkwells, caskets, or scholarly desk ornaments.
The marble exhibits soft edge softening, gentle surface patination, and minor atmospheric soiling commensurate with age, retaining a substantial, architectural presence.
