The Story
Constructed in the trompe l'œil tradition of high-library novelties, this cordial storage box takes the form of a casual stack of three leather-bound folio volumes. The spines, lettered in gilt for 'Recueil des Memoires / Paris', feature raised bands, decorative compartment stamping, and marbled or stained edges simulating bound paper quires.\n\nThe top volume board is hinged to reveal a concealed, hollow interior well intended for discreet parlour storage or valuables. Fabricated in calfskin over a rigid secondary carcass, the piece displays extensive, honest wear consistent with genuine handling, showing softened corners, leather abrasions, and the dry craquelure characteristic of antique bookbindings. Whether assembled as a bookbinder's novelty or adapted by an ingenious cabinetmaker, it remains a handsome and witty piece of functional library furniture.
