The Story

Modelled in the spirited, slightly mournful manner typical of late nineteenth-century French novelty toys, this standing bulldog is executed in moulded papier-mâché over a hollow armature, retaining remnants of its original flocked faux-fur finish. The expressive head features inset glass eyes, finely modelled jowls, and alert, folded ears, fitted with a painted or dyed red leather collar suspending a small brass bell.

Such figures were widely produced in Paris between the 1880s and the turn of the century, frequently incorporating clockwork movements, nodding head armatures, or internal bellow-driven growlers operated by a lead or string. Though time and play have worn the exterior flocking to reveal the honest texture of the paper beneath, the dog retains its wonderfully staunch stance and distinct canine character.
