The Story
This shadow box presents a pair of utilitarian household objects: two wire mesh fly swatters dating to circa 1925, mounted inversely against a cream fabric ground.
Each swatter is constructed with a stiffened wire-gauze blade bordered by taped fabric edging and wire reinforcement ribs, fixed at the throat with patterned reinforcement paper and tacked to a flat, slender wooden handle. One handle is finished in deep blue, the other in red, each pierced near the terminal for hanging. Centred between the two implements is a printed card label reading '1925'.
Housed in a modern moulded timber shadow box under glass, the presentation elevates everyday domestic hardware of the inter-war period into a study of graphic utilitarian design and vernacular manufacture.
