The Story
A life-sized seated bulldog figure dating from the turn of the twentieth century, likely produced in France or Germany as a salon novelty or shop-display model. Cast in a durable composition material over a moulded form, the body is treated with textured tool-work simulating a short, brindle coat beneath painted polychrome finishes.
The head is expressively modelled with heavy jowls, creased brow, and deep-set, dark brown inset glass eyes. Around the neck sits an original or early strapped leather collar secured with a small iron buckle. While closely related to the French automata and nodder bulldogs of the Belle Époque—popularised by Parisian makers such as Roulet & Decamps—this example retains a static, firmly seated posture, functioning as a decorative sentinel or fireside figure.
