The Story
A substantial carved hardwood equestrian bust, depicted in three-quarters profile with ears pricked and flared nostrils, terminating in a shaped moulded plinth. The head exhibits crisp muscular definition through the jaw and throat latch, with stylized locks of mane sweeping down the arched neck.
Carved in solid timber and finished in a deep mahogany-toned polish, the piece was likely conceived as a shop sign for a saddler, a harness maker's counter display, or as a decorative newel terminal or bracket element. The undulating contours of the plinth base suggest it was designed to sit flush against a wall or counter edge. Surface wear and minor edge rubbing are consistent with its working life.
