The Story
Made in Madagascar, this unusual piece is carved from a single block of dense hardwood, this standing male figure combines exaggerated zoomorphic features with a slender anthropomorphic body. The crocodilian head dominates the composition, defined by an extended, squared snout or beak deeply carved with a lozenge or scale pattern and chevron teeth along the profile. Above, stylised almond-shaped eyes sit beneath a crowned or crested cranium, supported by a pronounced, ringed neck.
The torso is rendered with minimal modelling, leading down to slightly bent legs, broad flattened feet integrated into a block base, and prominent phallic detailing. The entire surface has been treated with a dark, uniform patination that highlights the sharp gouge marks and tool work of the carving. While adopting visual tropes familiar from West African or Oceanic figurative traditions, the work exhibits the stylised, monumental quality often found in mid-twentieth-century tribal sculpture produced for ceremonial display or the ethnographic trade.
