The Story
Cast in plaster of Paris, this substantial anatomical fragment depicts a right foot truncated just above the malleolus. Such models were standard studio equipment throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, produced for art academies, ateliers, and drawing schools to instruct students in the nuances of bone structure, sinew, and foreshortening.
The modelling follows classical academic conventions, emphasizing pronounced extensor tendons, visible dorsal veins, and cleanly delineated phalanges, terminating in an angled, roughly flat severance at the lower shin. Cast in the round from a piece mould, the surface displays the crisp anatomical articulation typical of casts taken from Renaissance or antique masterworks—most likely after Michelangelo or the Hellenistic antique. Unpatinated with a matte white finish, it retains its original functional character as an artist’s reference piece.
