The Story

A mid-20th century novelty taxidermy hall stand in the form of a standing American black bear cub (Ursus americanus). Prepared in the upright posture traditional to novelty hall furniture of the late Victorian and mid-century sporting vernacular, the specimen is mounted over a manikin and fixed to a bevelled rectangular stained hardwood plinth of later construction.

The forelegs are extended forward to clasp an open turned timber hoop intended to retain walking sticks or brollies, positioned directly above a shallow turned timber drip well recessed on the baseboard below. Finished with inset glass eyes and natural claws intact. An unapologetic survival of North American lodge and sporting interior decoration, executed with characteristically dry mid-century construction methods.
