The Story
A sculptural garden ornament formed as a recumbent lion couché, modelled resting upon an integral plinth with its right forepaw draped over a foliate architectural scroll or rosetted volute. A recessed planting cavity behind the creature’s flank accommodates small botanical arrangements or moss.
The figure displays a heavy, textured impasto of historic white paint, lime wash, and natural atmospheric weathering over a composite stone or cast matrix. The lion’s stylised mane, prominent brow, and watchful expression reflect the classical Regency and Victorian revival traditions popularised in English and Continental garden statuary throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Offered in undisturbed country-house state with crusting, lichens, and aged patination.
