The Story

A Chinese carved softwood relief panel, late Qing Dynasty, originally fashioned as an architectural or shrine fitting and subsequently framed. The composition is carved in high, undercut relief against an oxblood-lacquered ground, depicting the Bodhisattva Guanyin standing gracefully beneath weeping bamboo shoots and rocky outcrops, flanked by an attendant child figure below. The figures and flora retain remnants of their original parcel-gilt finish, now patinated to a mellow bronze tone through age and handling.

Surmounting the figurative scene are four applied, carved Chinese characters, reading right-to-left as standard for the period. The panel is enclosed within a simple moulded, dark-lacquered wood frame, likely contemporary with its adaptation for domestic display. A distinct vertical split down the central ground attests to natural wood shrinkage across the grain, common to interior architectural elements of this construction.
