The Story
A late Victorian wall-hanging key cabinet constructed in walnut with parcel-ebonised and parcel-gilt ornament, dating to circa 1875. The design reflects the Aesthetic Movement’s fondness for geometric discipline tempered by stylised historicism.
The rectangular case is framed by strapwork fret carving, flanked by ebonised panels picked out with fine gilt foliate scrolls and roundels. Its single panelled door features a turned fluted boss overlaid with an ornate cast brass key motif, echoed by pierced strapwork hinges to the right edge and brass rosettes to the frame corners.
The interior retains its original tiered layout of brass hooks, both along the backboard and the inner face of the door, complete with an assortment of period keys and a stamped brass tag. Well-proportioned and functional, the cabinet illustrates the decorative attention lavished on utilitarian domestic furnishings in the late nineteenth century.
