The Story
Constructed in the manner of an architectural folly, this freestanding aviary is built in two tiers above an integral table stand. The upper cupola is crowned by a broken-arched pediment carved with a central scallop shell, supported on slender turned baluster columns enclosing fine vertical wirework.
Below, a stepped cornice surmounts the primary enclosure, configured with three arched bays flanked by pierced spandrels and pillared uprights. The front face features an arched sliding access hatch, flanked by simulated arcading. The hardwood frame is adorned throughout with hand-painted foliate strapwork, scrolls, and trailing motifs against a warm ground. The cage rests upon a shaped apron embellished with foliate sprays, supported on slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Designed as an imposing salon curiosity or decorative aviary, the piece retains its structural integrity and historical character.
