The Story
A Gothic Revival devotional figure, modelled in the round, depicting an ecclesiastical dignitary in full episcopal regalia. The figure wears an ornately decorated mitre and liturgical vestments with draped folds falling to an integral rounded plinth. Clasped centrally in both hands, he supports a severed, crowned head framed within a circular nimbus—an iconographical reference typical of cephalophore saints or specific martyr kings.
The execution combines historicist Gothic drapery with late nineteenth-century romantic realism in the treatment of the aged facial features and long beard. Formed from a pale composite or carved stone matrix, the surface retains an aged patination with areas of darker staining settling into the deeply carved folds. A significant break to the left arm reveals the granular internal structure of the casting or stone.
