The Story

A substantial Gothic Revival church pulpit, constructed in panelled oak with an openwork brass upper enclosure, dating from the late nineteenth century.

The structure is formed of an octagonal canted base carved with sunken trefoil roundels, rising through a stepped mid-rail bearing a small engraved brass presentation plaque. Above, the superstructure is carried on spiral-fluted brass columnar uprights, which frame arched panels of wrought brass tracery incorporating pierced trefoils, scrolling foliage, a central Latin cross, and an open roundel bearing the IHS Christogram. The moulded oak handrail caps the enclosure, framing an elevated internal oak platform.

The accompanying brass book rest features an engraved IHS monogram and pierced trefoil corners, mounted on an adjustable brass support column. Built with the sturdy architectural proportion characteristic of late Victorian ecclesiastical joinery.
