The Story
Modelled in the spirited, slightly mournful manner typical of late nineteenth-century French novelty toys, this standing bulldog is executed in moulded papier-mâché over a hollow armature, retaining remnants of its original calf hide finish. The expressive head features inset glass eyes, finely modelled jowls, and alert, folded ears, fitted with a painted or dyed red leather collar suspending a small brass bell.
Such figures were widely produced in Paris between the 1880s and the turn of the century, frequently incorporating clockwork movements, nodding head armatures, or internal bellow-driven growlers operated by a lead or string. Though time and play, the dog retains its wonderfully staunch stance and distinct canine character.
