The Story
Carved in dense hardwood, this head appears to have been crafted in the tradition of ethnographic curiosities or ceremonial effigies, perhaps evoking the form of a trophy or shrunken head. The visage features incised geometric scarification across the forehead and cheeks, slit eyes, a broad nose, and exposed, carved teeth.
The head is adorned with an elaborate coiffure constructed from twisted, coarse brown fibres, likely vegetable cordage or horsehair, embellished with strung wooden and coloured glass beads, fine brass-tone chains, and a circlet of cowrie shells at the throat. The assemblage displays varied hand-worked textures, from the smooth-rubbed planes of the facial planes to the tangled mass of braided fibres above.
The object is presented on a contemporary stand comprising a clear acrylic rod fixed into a squared softwood block, elevating the piece for cabinet display.
