The Story
A compact monocular compound microscope manufactured by the Spencer Lens Company of Buffalo, New York, dating from the early decades of the twentieth century. Constructed with a heavy cast-iron horseshoe foot and curved limb finished in glossy black enamel, the instrument balances structural rigidity with finely machined movement.
The optical tube and mechanical components are executed in brass and lacquered brass, featuring dual knurled thumbwheels for coarse rack-and-pinion adjustment, complemented by a fine-focus micrometer screw atop the limb. The rectangular specimen stage retains its pair of sprung nickel-plated clips above a pivoting sub-stage condenser assembly and double-sided gimballed plano-concave mirror. The manufacturer’s stamp and serial number are neatly incised across the rear foot, representative of the standard laboratory pattern widely adopted across academic and medical institutions during the period.
