The Story
A substantial carved timber architectural console bracket, dating to the latter half of the nineteenth century. Likely salvaged from an exterior cornice, shopfront, or overdoor canopy, the piece is configured as an S-scroll corbel with upper and lower volutes flanking an arched central channel.
The structure is assembled from laminated sections of softwood, block-carved and worked with bold cavetto mouldings and lateral scroll bosses to read clearly from street level. Its surface retains traces of layered, heavily weathered grey and cream paint, worn back through exposure to reveal the dry grain and natural shrinkage fissures of the timber beneath. A fine example of late Victorian exterior woodwork, complete with an honest, unrestored historic surface.
